| Combine some of the best
Fly fishing and safari areas in Botswana for a unforgettable
Fishing experience. Some of the best sport fishing can be found in the Okavango Delta and Chobe River systems. The Okavango has the largest concentration of fish due to the abundant water and plant life. There are over 80 species of fish found in Botswana, but the most common fish caught are the fighting Tiger Fish, bream (tilapia) and barbel (catfish). Fishing supports the livelihoods of the rural fishing communities as well as providing an special activity for tourists visiting the lodges and camps in Botswana. Each year the Okavango River in western Botswana plays host to one of Africa`s finest sport fishing spectacles... the catfish run. Anytime from mid September through to mid November the delta`s barbel congregate in immense numbers and a mass upstream pilgrimages occurs. The driving force behind this behaviour is commonly believed to be the need to spawn. Also thought that the falling water levels send millions of barbel on this upstream breeding migration. The Barbel prey on smaller fish and literally flatten the papyrus with their vast numbers. For the anglers that experience such a run, the fly fishing is incredible. |
